This course looks at the US in a transnational context—that is, how it may be seen from abroad and how it may be seen in comparison with other places. The focus will be on 18th and 19th century writers, both foreigners writing from abroad (some of whom never visited the United States so they write what they imagine about our country) and those who visited here.
